He hung from a tree for over two hours, with the abyss beneath him. After a 150-meter fall on Schieferstein in Upper Austria, a 77-year-old feared for his life. With his last strength he cried for help – and was overheard.
And the cries for help were heard – on a farm below the crash site at Schieferstein in Reichraming, the residents became suspicious and listened more attentively. They set the rescue chain in motion. The seriously injured man was found, stabilized and detained shortly before nightfall by an alpine police officer and members of the mountain rescue service.
Until it’s dark
The 77-year-old from Thalheim near Wels traveled alone and fell when descending the slate around 3 p.m. – 150 meters deep before a tree stopped the fall. It took two hours for his calls to be heard, and it wasn’t until nightfall that help arrived.
And so it was no longer possible to save the dew with the rescue helicopter and the mountain rescuers from Steyr-Losenstein had to rappel the badly injured man 300 meters down to the next forest road. After dark, the Reichraming fire brigade and the Gaflenz fire brigade, where a drone with floodlights is stationed, came to the rescue.
60 emergency services involved
Arriving safely on the road, the emergency doctor who took the 77-year-old to Steyr Hospital was already waiting. In total about 60 rescue workers, fire brigade, Red Cross, emergency doctor, rescue helicopter and police were present.
