Carlos Alcaraz is back. The world number 1 will return to competition next week after a two-week break following his early exit from the Astana tournament, his first ATP date since winning the US Open.
It was at the Basel Open, the penultimate stop on the circuit before the ATP Finals in Turina tournament that will feature two more Top 10 players, Casper Ruud and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The road to the final will not be easy for the man from Murcia, who will make his debut against young Briton Jack Draper. In case of victory, they will be seen in the round of 16 with the winner of the duel between Adrian Mannarino and Botic Van de Zandschulp.
His opponent in the quarterfinals could be his great friend Pablo Carreñoas long as the Spaniard beats Sebastian Báez in the first round and Cressy or Stricker in the round of 16.
Enracharado Felix Auger-Aliassime will be, in the semifinals, his last obstacle before the final that he will face Casper Ruud, the top favorite in the lower part of the draw and debut Stan Wawrinka.
Alcaraz maintains a cushion of points that, regardless of what he does in Switzerland, will allow him to still leave the top given his advantage of 920 points over Rafa Nadal, second on the list (6,730 vs. 5,810) and 1,130 over Norwegian Casper Ruud, third with 5,600 points.
After playing in Switzerland, he will appear in the Masters 1,000 in Paris-Bercy, scheduled for the week of October 31 to November 6 in the capital of France; and the Nitto ATP Finals, the Masters Cup that will be held in the Italian city of Turin from November 13 to 20 and for which he has qualified since September 8.
The auction of the year, side exhibitions, will be done by the student of Juan Carlos Ferrero in Davis Cup Final Eightwhere he will again represent Spain from November 23 to 27 in Malaga.
Besides Alcaraz and Carreño, three other Spaniards are registered at the Basel tournament. Robert Baptistwho starts the first round against a player from the previous one, Alexander Davidovichwho will face Miomir Kecmanovic at the beginning, and Albert Ramoswho will face Lorenzo Musetti.
