the spanish pilot Nani Romewinner of the Dakar Rally in motorcycles and cars and one of the great attractions next weekend in the VIII Rally Ciudad de Granada, will try to “enjoy” the Andalusian event, where he returned to competition after spending several months for a malignant tumor.
The VIII Rally Ciudad de Granada will be Roma’s first event contested since March, when he was diagnosed with bladder cancer shortly after participating in the Rally Tierras Altas de Lorca.
Since then, the double Dakar winner has undergone surgery twice and underwent chemotherapy sessions in between the two surgeries.
“I now recover my physical form and pass the controls that they touched, every three weeks or a month. Now they are a little more apart, but the important thing is that everything has been perfect. In fact, everything is running faster than the doctors thought. I feel good, I’m not at my previous level, but I’m improving little by little”, explains Roma.
“When you talk about cancer, about a malignant tumor, it’s a very difficult moment to accept. Then you see the level of pain and you have to accept it because there are things in life that you cannot change ,” Roma added in statements given to the media by the organizers of the Granada rally.
Nani Roma will drive a Volkswagen Polo R5 in the test and will be joined by Álex Haro as co-driver.
“I hope I enjoy the rally. Beyond setting a goal for myself, I’m looking forward to seeing how I react after months of standing. Before, I would have said that I am here to win, but this is a new car so I am here to enjoy”, he added.
“For me it will be important to progress during the race, I do not set any other goals for myself. I hope that the public will have a good time”, added Roma, confirming that no he plans to participate in the 2023 Dakar but in the 2024 edition.
