Mexico aims to host Summer Olympics in 2036 or 2040 without borrowingwhere it will use the infrastructure it has and the national government will provide only 10 percent of the financing.
“We want to consider the changes that have taken place at the Olympic Games, including financing. Now 30 percent comes from ticket sales, another 30 percent with sponsors, 10 percent is provided by the host government. and the remaining 30 percent is provided by the International Olympic Committee (IOC),” Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported on Wednesday.
The head of the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the country’s candidacy to organize the Olympics and opposed former Olympic medalist in athletics Ana Guevara, director of the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports, who assured last month that Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Mexican president, rejected the idea of holding the fair.
“Informed the president and the obligation of this secretary is to support the initiatives of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM). Now we will not spend. We have everything to do it and the Government of Mexico has many initiatives to make it happen“, added the candidate to become president of Mexico after the end of López Obrador’s six-year term in 2024.

Mexico has organized the Summer Olympic Games once in its history, when it hosted the 1968 edition in Mexico City.
Much of that year’s infrastructure still stands and is used in various sports like the Olympic Stadium where Pumas UNAM plays Mexican soccer.
The North American country will organize the Soccer World Cup in 2026 along with Canada and the United States.
