Riyadh repeats as controversial Super Cup venue

Date:

Despite the controversy between Rubiales and Piqué, the FEF honors the contract signed in 2019 and confirms the Arab city as the epicenter of the tournament that Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Betis will play in January 2023

The Spanish Football Federation (FEF) officially announced on Thursday that Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, will repeat as a venue the next edition of the Spanish Super Cup, to be played from January 11 to 15, 2023. The announcement comes in the controversial context of the alleged conflict of interest instituted by Luis Rubiales, president of the FEF, and Gerard Piqué, Barcelona player and director of Kosmos, for which the Catalan central agency collected 24 million euros in commissions.

The total amount of the agreement between the FEF and Saudi Arabia was 400 million euros, to be divided between the Federation, clubs and an intermediary agency, Rubiales himself said in a statement last April, when the audio between the central and the maximum president of Spanish football came to light. Thus, the Federation complies with the contract signed with the Saudis three years ago.

In the semi-finals Barcelona will play against Betis and Real Madrid against Valencia. To be determined, they will be played on November 11 and 12 and the final on Sunday November 15. All matches will be played at King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, an avant-garde stadium with a capacity of more than 60,000 spectators and a fond memory of the Madridistas, who won the last Super Cup after beating Athletic 0-2.
