Date:

The jury considers it the best work of the 91 presented by publishers and authors from all over the country

The jury of the XIX Setenil Prize, known as the Oscar of the story, met on October 26 and awarded the prize to Fernando Navarro, for his book Malaventura published by Impedimenta in Madrid, as announced by the Councilor for Culture of the Molina City Council of Segura, Soledad Nortes Navarro. The jury, made up of Fernando Clemot, Carmen Pujante, Charo Guarino and Antonio J. Ruiz Munuera, unanimously selected this work from the 91 entries submitted by publishers and authors from all over Spain.

The writer Fernando Navarro (Granada, 1980) has worked as a film scriptwriter with, among others, Álex de la Iglesia, Rodrigo Cortés, Paco Plaza, Jonás Trueba and Jaume Balagueró. He has been nominated twice for the Goya Awards, in the categories of Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. Among his filmography, Toro (2016), Verónica (2018) or Enemy Cosmetics (2020) stand out. His latest script to date is Bajocero (2021), a thriller for Netflix that was number one in more than 55 countries. He is a member of the Writers Guild of America and has taught creative writing workshops in New York. He also collaborated with media such as Radio 3, Cadena SER or Letras Libres.

Malaventura, winner of the €10,000 of the XIX Setenil Prize, is his first book. Impedimenta defines it as “a sour western with a Tarantine air. A series of stories with the south as an obsession. A hybrid of Lorca and Cormac McCarthy, who drinks as much from the texts of the flamenco tradition as Sergio Leone». publisher also described it as “a kind of neo-romance set in a desperate and remote Andalusia, at once unreal and authentic, mythical and wild, full of extreme characters: quinquis, sorceresses, hunters, demons flying through the waves of the radio, good-hearted mercenaries or children who curse an entire city».
