The British Lewis Hamiltonfrom Mercedes, confirmed this Sunday that the Spaniards said Fernando Alonsofrom Alpine, worth his seven world titles alone “funny”.
“I can’t really say anything about that, I’m laughing. I tried to be polite to these people. For example, when they ask me who is the best driver I have ever fought against, I just throw a compliment”, explains the driver who has the most titles in the Formula 1 world along with the German Michael Schumacher.
Hamilton’s comments came after finishing second in the Mexican Grand Prix and a day after posting a photo on his Twitter account in which the Briton was seen winning Indianapolis 2007, ahead of Alonso, second.
That year was Hamilton’s debut in Formula 1 and he was a teammate of the Spaniard at McLaren; in the end the Briton finished in second place in the world championship above Alonso, third, and below Finn Kimi Räikkönen, monarch with Ferrari.
The post on social media was in response to comments by Alonso, who commented that Hamilton winning seven world titles competing only against his teammate is not the same as he did in 2005 and 2006.
The Spaniard considered it more difficult to capture the titles in 2005 and 2006, or those achieved by the Dutch Max Verstappen, of Red Bull, in the last two years.
After it was declared, Alonso clarified on Twitter that “all the titles are amazing, worthy and inspiring.”
“There’s no doubt that it’s interesting to see the comments made about it, but it’s not really important. That’s why I just gave a thumbs up,” said Hamilton in Mexico.
