The Spanish team consisting of Andreu Blanes, Oriol Cardona, Alejandro García and Miquel Corbera won the silver medal this Sunday at the Trail World Championships from Chiang Mai (Thailand), in a test dominated by Ugandan athletes, who won four of the first five places.
Ugandan Samuel Kibet won, covering the 10.7-kilometer route in 40:02 minutes with a cumulative altitude difference of +/-443 meters and a highest point of 771 meters above sea level, midway through career.
Kenyan Patrick Kipngeno, ten seconds behind, took the silver medal, avoiding a complete Ugandan sweep. Timothy Toroitich, a regular in Spanish cross-country races, finished third, 24 seconds behind the winner.
Valencian Andreu Blanes was the best Spanish, sixth with a time of 41:31. Oriol Cardona finished eighth (52:44), Alejandro García fifteenth (43:23) and Miquel Corbera nineteenth (43:44).
“I’ve given everything. I’m happy but I came looking for something else,” acknowledged Blanes, the first European in the race.
Mexican Everardo Moreno, eighteenth with a time of 43:41, is the best ranked Latin American. His partner David Santiago was twenty-sixth with 44:11.
Uganda doubled up in the women’s race with Rebecca Cheptegei, champion with a time of 46:25, and Annet Chelangat, second with 46:52. Along with them, American Allie McLaughlin (48:31) rose to the podium in third place.
The four Spanish representatives also competed, two days ago, in the Vertical Climb. Here the best classified is Onditz Iturbe, ninth with a score of 50:57. María Ordóñez was classified in 33rd place with 50:01, Laia Montoya in 39th with 56:12 and Andrea Rico in 49th with 59:47. Spain is seventh by teams.
Argentine Chiara Mainetti closed the top-20, twentieth and best Latin American with a record of 52:24.
The Up & Down competition, known as the Classic race, concluded the Championships of the World of Mountain and Trail Running, held in its widest program: Vertical Climb, Classic Up & Down races, Trail Running Marathon and Ultra Trail Running.
