The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar accused Germany of applying a “double standard” for his criticism of the World Cup host country’s human rights record and defended the German ambassador’s summons, in an interview published Monday.
Qatar has faced sharp criticism from human rights groups over its treatment of migrant workers, who along with other foreigners make up the bulk of the country’s population.
Last month, Qatar’s foreign ministry summoned the German ambassador over comments by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser that a country’s human rights record should be considered in its selection to host the World Cup. .
“On the one hand, the German population is misinformed by government politicians; on the other hand, the government has no problem with us when it comes to energy partnerships or investments,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani told the newspaper . ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ in an interview.
“The double standard bothers us,” he said, adding that Qatar has faced a systematic campaign against it in the 12 years since it was selected to host the World Cup that, he said, no other country has faced. “It is ironic that this tone is given to European countries that call themselves liberal democracies. It sounds very arrogant, blatant, and very racist,” he told the newspaper.
Al-Thani called out calls for security guarantees for minorities – which Faeser demanded as a prerequisite before agreeing to attend the World Cup – and said German politicians should focus more on those hate crimes within their own borders.
