A player from Olhanense, of Portugal’s fourth division, was sent off by the match referee after it was alleged that he had been subjected to a racist insult by a rival during the match.
The Portuguese-Guinean midfielder Edson Piresfrom Olhanense, spoke to the referee this Sunday after Diogo Andradefrom Rabo de Peixe, allegedly made a racist insult to him in the first half, to which the referee only replied that he would be “attentive”.
The player explained the situation again, then the referee showed him a yellow card, followed by another and a red card.
Edson left the field in tears and was comforted by his teammates, and the match, which Rabo de Peixe won 0-2, was delayed for 7 minutes, according to Portuguese newspaper “Record”.
Luís Torres, head of SAD do Olhanense, described the incident in the local newspaper as “something surreal and incomprehensible” and announced that he would continue a protest with the Portuguese Football Federation.
