Arsenal, the Prime Minister’s unexpected leader

Date:

He starts the second phase of the competition with a five-point lead over Manchester City and his transformation is confirmed

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are the Premier’s leader for the World Cup forced break after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-2 on Saturday night. The ‘Wolves’ are at the bottom before Julen Lopetegui takes over the reins of the team. The result of the game was irrelevant to their position at the top of the English league following Manchester City’s 2–1 home defeat to Brentford.

Five points ahead of City and seven and eight respectively over Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, who have played one game, the gunners chanted “we’re first in the league!” at the Molineux stadium. They are under the illusion of winning the Premiership – which they last won in 2004 – with a team that has had an average age of less than 25 years in all games.

“To be where we are now is phenomenal and we are enjoying this moment,” the San Sebastian coach said after the game. “No one expected us to be in this position and win so many games.” They have won twelve of the fourteen contested. They lost points to draw with Southampton and lost to Leeds United, both games at the Emirates.

The only major trophy the club has won since Arsene Wenger left in 2018 was the 2019-20 FA Cup. It was played in August, and not May as usual due to the pandemic. After three years as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, Arteta had taken charge of the squad in November. Only seven of the 28 players in that squad remain on the team.

In the summer of 2019, Edú, a Brazilian midfielder in Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ and later in Valencia, also arrived at the club. He was the first technical director in the club’s history. He would have made the decision to replace Unai Emery (now at Aston Villa) with Arteta. According to the Daily Telegraph, Edú presented a five-year plan to the board of directors, the fruits of which would begin to be confirmed in 2023.

The reform has not been easy. Arteta had to sack Mehut Özil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to break the spiral of poor results, lack of discipline, discontent in the stands and a general atmosphere with a putrid aroma. After losing the first game of the 2021-22 season, at Brentford 2-0, commentators and fans criticized Arteta for failing to rectify the team’s endemic problems.

But the season ended with Antonio Conte’s Chelsea battling for fourth place in the Champions League. The Arsenal in which the Norwegian Martin Odegaard had already settled as an advanced midfielder, fell in the home game of Newcastle in the last game of the season without resistance and ran out of ‘Champions’.

The signing of Gabriel Jesus, a Brazil international who had run out of options at City following the arrival of Erling Haaland, has given the striker more joy and bite this year. The club has strengthened the midfield and defense. He doesn’t seem to have the mental fragility – and in playing with set pieces or in winning back the ball – hallmarks of the team since the last Wenger sides.

The four clubs at the top of the table are the ones that are in shape and each of them seems capable of winning the competition. All coaches express the need to wait until we see how the internationals return, to understand the conditions for the start of the second part of the Premier, in which there will be three Gipuzkoan coaches.
