The pairing of Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos succumbed for the second time in this edition of the ATP Finals to be held in Turin, against Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo and Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer, in a match decided by a super tiebreaker, 6-1, 6-7 (3) and 10-7.
The Spanish-Argentine pairing is greatly complicated by its presence in the semifinals of the Copa de Maestrosa stage of competition that they have always reached since they were a couple, but where they always succumb, strangely, to the couple who eventually become champions.
In this rivalry between the losers of the first day, ‘Chelo’ Arévalo and Rojer marked the territory with a prolific first set where, with two breaks on their opponents’ first serve, they put themselves into a five-nil advantage, more than enough to close out the first stake.
They relaxed in the second and Zeballos and Granollers, who already know what it takes to win this championshiphe did it in 2012 with Marc López, forcing them to try to extend the clash to a super tiebreaker.
Neither gave up their serve at the start, but Zeballos and Granollers had to save three break points with the score at 5-5, in the most tense moment of the game. An impulse that, yes, they used to take the ‘tie-break’ 3-7.
In the third, definitive set, played to ten points, it was enough for Rojer and Arévalo to hold their serve and take advantage of the break in prove their first victory and keep their chances of passing while almost leaving the Argentine and the Spanish.
