The president of France thus responds to criticism of his intention to travel to Qatar as Les Blues make it to at least the semi-finals
French President Emmanuel Macron says “politicizing sport” is a “very bad idea” days before the start of the controversial World Cup in Qatar. Macron was responding to those who have criticized his plans to travel to Qatar if the French team qualifies for the semi-finals of the World Cup.
“Sport should not be politicised. These questions should be asked when designating these events. Whether it’s climate change or human rights, we’re not going to raise (those issues) every time the event is already happening,” Macron said in a statement to the French press in Thailand, according to television network BFMTV.
Macron explained that he talks “constantly” with the Qatari government “on all matters”. “We have frank, friendly and constructive relations,” added the president, a fan of Olympique de Marseille.
The French president also does not want the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris, to be politicized. “I don’t know in what context the Games will be held at the geopolitical level. But I am sure that the calling of these great events is to enable athletes from every country, sometimes countries at war, to bring sport to life. And in this way, through sport, to find ways to discuss, where people can no longer talk to each other,” Macron said.
