Trip to the World Cup in Qatar: one euro for bread, twelve for beer and 4,000 for a complete package

Date:

Following Spain to the round of 16 will cost around 7,500 euros and if Luis Enrique’s team reached the final, including flight, hotel and all tickets, another 14,000 would have to be added.

A trip to Qatar and attending Spain’s three matches in the first phase of the World Cup, against Costa Rica, Germany and Japan, plus an extra match, will cost around €4,000. It is the cheapest price, which, in addition to tickets to the stadiums, also includes a return flight to Doha, arriving on the opening day of the World Cup, November 20, and departing on November 3. dispute in the group stage. There would be thirteen nights in a hotel, including breakfast and possible transport by cruise to the various venues where the Spanish team will play: Doha, Al Khor and Al-Rayyan.

Once there we have to take into account the exchange rate. A Qatari riyal is approximately equal to 26 or 27 euro cents. On this simulated journey we are helped by Anna, a friend who has lived in Doha for ten years.

After a flight of about seven hours, we will most likely prefer to take a VTC to get to the accommodation and leave our suitcase. There is also the possibility to buy the transport card. From the third ride on the same day, the other rides of that day are free.

However, we should know that on the occasion of the World Cup, they have created the ‘Hayya Card’, a card required to enter the stadiums that includes free travel on trains and buses.

With the suitcase already in the accommodation, we set off to taste the atmosphere of the city. People waving their country’s flag, jerseys of all teams and much commotion to celebrate the start of the World Cup.

In Qatar, there is only one shop that sells alcohol and some pork, but to buy there you need to have a special permit and make an appointment in advance. Until now, only non-Muslim residents with a job, stating their salary, could obtain the permit. As a curiosity, our private guide explains that you can only spend 10-15% of your base salary on alcohol each month. However, it is rumored that with the arrival of international fans, they will also open shop for them. A beer costs around nine riyals (2.39 euros), while the price in the pub is five times as high. Naturally, the organizers of the World Cup have banned the sale of alcohol near the stadiums.

Therefore, the first day, since we landed in Doha, we can spend about 50 euros, including a taxi transfer from the airport and dinner with beer. In any case, if we want to spend as little as possible during the two weeks that we will be supporting La Roja, it is best to use public transport (or the cruise that includes travel to the stadiums where the Spanish team plays) and do the rest of the days groceries at the supermarket.

After breakfast we go to the supermarket to buy groceries for various lunches or dinners. The basket costs us the same as a daily menu in Spain, according to the Spanish Catering Business Confederation.

The first match of the Spanish team against Costa Rica is approaching. We reached the stadium by public transport and followed a wave of fans chanting all kinds of football anthems. Inside the fence, we don’t know how much food and drink could cost us, but Anna assures that prices will go up during the month of the World Cup.

Since we didn’t eat or drink during the game for fear of the prizes, we left hungry and poked around different restaurants. In Qatar it is easier to find restaurants with food from all over the world than a typical restaurant from there. The price is quite similar to what we can find in the same type of establishments in Spain.

During this second day we spent about 23 euros. If we continue at this rate during the first part of the World Cup, we could spend around 4,500 euros on the package we bought from Spain, transport in Qatar, lunch and dinner outside the hotel and some other extra costs.

If Spain qualify for the Round of 16, the two-game packages for that tie will still be available, with an estimated price of €3,500. The departure would be on December 3 and the return on December 7. With locations for two meetings, four hotel stays, of varying categories, and possibly cruises. In other words, the price for six matches, four from Spain and another two from different teams, with 17 hotel nights, would be at least 7,500 euros.

The purchase process through official channels can still be managed from the FIFA website through Qatar Airways, although many packs have already sold out. The so-called quarter-final, semi-final and final packs have all already been sold with Spain as the ‘favorite team’ and while they are still for sale with other teams, most of them are also no longer available. Only the quarter-final package, to witness two matches in this tie, had an estimated minimum price of 3,650 euros, while the semi-final and final package cost almost 10,000 euros, for the matches between the top four teams and the duel for the title on December 18.
