the aussie Josh Cavalloone of the first soccer players to speak publicly about his homosexuality, strongly denounced the decision of FIFA Tuesday to ban the wearing of rainbow bracelets during the World Cup in Qatar.
“FIFA has banned all teams from wearing the ‘OneLove’ bracelet by actively supporting LGBTQ+ people at the World Cup. You, FIFA, have lost all respect for you,” he wrote on his Instagram account.
“(Faced with) all the work that my colleagues and the LGBTQ+ community are doing to make football inclusive, they show that football is not a place open to everyone,” he continued.
Seven European nations had planned to wear colorful ‘One Love’ anti-discrimination armbands at the World Cup, but backed out at the last minute on Monday under the threat of “sporting sanctions” from FIFA.
In another message, posted on his Twitter account, he also attacks FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who issued a notice to the 32 qualified teams, urging them to “focus on football.”
“This is not the first time we have been told to ‘stick to football’. Attacks on the LGBTQ+ community by World Cup leaders affect so many people who live in silence… To be a good world leader of sports, you must not give up bringing ALL people together,” he wrote.
