Tim Weah, on behalf of the president

Date:

The American striker, son of the legendary George Weah, winner of the 1995 Ballon d’Or and president of Liberia, brings his father’s successes to life

Timothy Weah has an infinity mirror in his house every morning in which to view himself. His father. However much he can achieve at the World Cup in Qatar, the American striker who scored his team’s goal against Wales may not be able to emulate his progenitor, the giant George Weah.

George Weah was a fantastic striker of the 1990s who marked several signs on the football path that made it different. He was the first African to win the Ballon d’Or, the best player in the world, and he also became someone influential far from the stadiums. He was president of his country, the Republic of Liberia.

Weah Sr. was born in a suburb of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, in a very poor family. The boy’s strength led him to football, playing almost four games a week in a few teams to bring some money to the family.

In 1987, Cameroonian club Tournere de Yaoundé toured Liberia with the intention of recruiting players into their ranks. He saw that striker who had the lightness of a gazelle and the strength of a rhinoceros. Weah signed for the Cameroonian team and began his history in football.

Transferred to Monaco, the gateway to Europe for Africans, Weah was soon recruited by Paris Saint Germain. In the Parque de los Príncipes he teamed up with a French striker, the very good David Ginola, and together they spread terror all over Europe.

In 1995 he was transferred to the almighty Milan de Capello who had just dominated European football with the Dutch clan and Arrigo Sacchi. With Milan, Weah won the Ballon d’Or in 1995 and two competitions in Italy. His career took a turn for the worse when he went to England (Chelsea, Manchester United).

George Weah was never able to fulfill the dream his son is living today. Playing at a World Cup, yet a citizen of a country with no weight in football, Liberia. However, you have achieved something that seems much more difficult. Being elected president of his country (he has been since 2018) in a country ravaged by civil wars and death.

Tim Weah has had a different life much more fun than his father’s. He was born in Brooklyn (New York) thanks to his father who took him away from the civil war and massacres in Liberia. There he studied and trained as a football player.

He has somehow followed in his father’s footsteps as he has been an emigrated footballer to France albeit out of opulence. He signed for PSG at the age of 17, although he was loaned out to Celtic Glasgow and then transferred to Lille where he currently plays.

Powerful as his relative, but without the superior technique, the United States winger has already made his mark in the World Cups by scoring his country’s first goal in this event in Qatar.
