Mateu Lahoz had to wait until the second day to make his debut

Antonio Mateu Lahoz will have to wait until the beginning of the second day of world who starts next Friday for his debut in his second World Cup. The Spanish referee had not yet been appointed as of Thursday, the final day of the first World Cup. So at the earliest it will not be done until Friday, on the occasion of the second day of groups A and B.

This Thursday there will be Spanish representation in Switzerland – Cameroon where the Spanish assistant Pau Cebrian will serve as offside referee and Burgos Bengoechea will act as AVAR assistant with Argentine referee Facundo Tello. Alejandro Hernández Hernández is still yet to make his debut, with all indications that VAR will be done in Mateu’s first match

He is looking for his third match as the main referee in a World Cup

There were five matches in which Mateu Lahoz participated as a referee in the World Cup. The two in the group stage in Russia. His debut was on 21 June 2018 in the Denmark-Australia match which ended in a draw to one. Meeting where the Valencian showed two yellow cards to Danes Poulsen and Sisto. Five days later, he officiated his second and to date his last game as the main referee at the World Cup. It was Iceland 1 Croatia 2, a meeting in which he came to show up to five yellow cards. Three of them in Iceland and the remaining two in the Croatian team.

But Mateu Lahoz’s role did not end there because the Valencian stayed for three games where he acted as the fourth referee. It will also be Croatia-Nigeria in the group stage with Brazil-Mexico in the round of 16 and Sweden-England in the quarterfinals.

There the first World Cup adventure ended when FIFA appointed the twelve referees who remained for the semifinals, third and fourth place along with the final of the last World Cup event. Pau Cebrian and Roberto Díaz were accompanied as assistants in this first adventure and are now repeating in Qatar. In addition, there will be three other VAR referees; Martínez Munuera, Hernández Hernández and De Burgos Bengoechea, with Spain being the country with the most referees in the VOR room.
