Agur in tradition on the Bilbao Athletic bench

Date:

The appointment of Álex Pallarés as Bilbao Athletic coach marks the end of an unwritten tradition at the centenary rojiblanco club. The information regarding this was provided yesterday by Adurizpedia, through its twitter account @DatAthle, after making official who will replace Bingen Arostegi at the subsidiary bank. The person in charge of said account gave more details about it during the intervention in the sports program of Onda Vasca.

Pallarés is the first coach to take over the reins of the Athletic subsidiary whose origin is not from Biscay, nor has he previously worked as a footballer in the rojiblanco’s first team, having been born in another province. In other words, all the coaches who managed to direct Bilbao Athletic throughout its history were born in Bizkaia or, if not, worked like lions during their time in the first team.

This quintet of famous former rojiblancos not born in Bizkaia with a past as Athletic players consists of Iribar, Valverde himself, De la Fuente, Ziganda and Joseba Etxeberria.

31 coaches

Bilbao Athletic has had, according to data also provided by Adurizpedia, a total of 31 coaches since it began in the 1964-65 season, 26 of them from Biscay. Emblematic lions and coaches such as Iribar, Gainza, Iriondo, Uriarte, Rojo I, Ziganda, Koldo Agirre, Amorortu, Mendilibar, Sarabia, Saéz, Txutxi Aranguren have passed through the bench of the rojiblanco subsidiary throughout its history.
