The French Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castera, Considering that the French soccer team can still “use the spaces of freedom” to express their commitment in favor of human rights during the Qatar World Cup.
“I think the decision taken by FIFA to ban the ‘One Love’ bracelet continues to create controversy,” the minister told the French Senate television channel.
Oudéa-Castera has applauded the gesture by German players who covered their mouths in protest against FIFA censorship, ahead of their debut in the competition.
“Do I want to see a space of absolute freedom? The answer is clearly yes. Are there still spaces of freedom where France can continue to express its commitment to human rights? The answer is yes. This is shown by Germans” he added.
Oudéa-Castéra recalled that the French team had already shown “its commitment to human rights and the ecological transition in a letter” published on November 15, in which they announced that they would make a donation to an NGO dedicated to the protection of human rights.
“Now there are weeks in the future where (French players) can express themselves freely, use their spaces of freedom to bring their message. They belong to a country that values them very much and is important that they represent it,” he said.
Oudéa-Castéra also congratulated the French team for their “great victory” last Tuesday against Australia (4-1), which he described as one of the “moments of joy” generated by this sport.
