Australian triathlete Marcel Walkington was the fastest in the eighth edition of the Open 5k Jean Bouinthe younger sister of the historic race organized by Mundo Deportivo, crossing the finish line at the Arc de Triomf with a time of 14’11. In the female category, the winner was santboiana Laura Heredia, who aspires to compete in the modern pentathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with a time of 17’08. The race was born in 2014 with the desire to remember the beginning of this trial in 1920, when it finished at the finish line located in the Arc de Triomf.
Marcel Walkington was the fastest of 2,000 participants in the famous Jean Bouin short test. The Australian, a resident of Barcelona and a Master in Numerical Engineering student at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, is an international triathlete and Oceania champion in 2016 and runner-up in 2017. “I felt very comfortable throughout the event. The route is very favorable and has few turns and it is perfect to achieve a good score”, said Walkington as soon as he finished the race. The second position on the podium was decided in an exciting final sprint taken by Brahim Fateh (L’Hospitalet Atletisme) in 14’35, ahead of Jordi Pujol (Club Atlètic TMB with 14’35.
In the female category, the fastest was Laura Heredia (Escola Esportiva Llor) with a time of 17’08. The athlete from Sant Boi took part in the race as part of his modern pentathlon preparation. “My goal is to participate in the 2024 Paris Games and today’s race has been very good for me. I had a very good feeling and I achieved my objective”, he declared after winning. In second position came Khadija Mendow (Club Atletisme Asco ) with 17’10 and Marina Burgaya (Katoa) finished on the podium with 17’25.
The award ceremony was attended by Gabriel Arranz, director of promotion and sporting events at the Barcelona City Council; Mauro Ruiz, deputy director of marketing for Mundo Deportivo; and Borja Grau, from Zona Vip Events.
