The tiebreak criteria at the World Cup in Qatar 2022

Date:

Unlike other competitions such as the Champions League or the League, the individual duel between the two teams does not always determine the final standings in the event of a draw.

This Monday ends the second day of the World Cup in Qatar 2022. There is only one left before the round of 16 is determined and there are already groups where different teams can score equal on points, goals and even cards. How would the final classification in the World Cup be determined?

The rules are simple. Unlike UEFA with the Champions League or La Liga, FIFA rewards the goal difference and the goals scored during the respective match. In other words, in case of a tie between two or more teams, the goals scored count towards the result between the two.

This criterion benefits Spain, which can rest easy on the last matchday with the seven goals against Costa Rica. Apart from a disaster and a historic victory for Germany, La Roja will be in the round of 16.

This is the state of affairs in the group stage:

1- Goal balance

2- Goals for

3- Individual duel or greater number of points between the tied teams.

4- Goal difference between the tied teams.

6- Greater number of goals scored between the teams with a tie.

7- Fair play depending on yellow and red (yellow 1 point, double yellow 3 points, direct red 4 points and then yellow and direct red 5 points).

8- Drawing.
