France’s Stéphanie Frappart will officiate the Germany-Costa Rica match, becoming the first woman to direct a World Cup match
For the first time in history, a woman will referee a World Cup match. France’s Stéphanie Frappart, accompanied by Neuza Back and Karen Diaz, will lead a female referee trio to officiate the Costa Rica-Germany game. Next Thursday at 8 p.m. is the decisive match of the last day of group E, in which Spain and Japan also compete.
At the age of 38, the French referee, who had already made history by acting as the fourth referee in Mexico-Poland and Portugal-Ghana, continues to break barriers by achieving another career milestone. Frappart was the first woman to referee a Ligue 1 match, a European Super Cup final, an official national team match, a Champions League match or a French Cup final.
Although her name was considered a possibility to direct the opening match between Qatar and Ecuador, she had to wait for match number 42 to write her name in the history books of the World Cups, as none of the three collegiate members chosen for the World Cup -Frappart, the Japanese Yoshimi Yamashita and the Rwandan Salima Mukasanga- acted as head referees.
