A young man died at the hands of Iranian security forces after going out to celebrate his team’s defeat against the USA in Qatar World Cupthe Oslo-based NGO Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) reported on Thursday.
“His name is Mehran Samak, he was shot in the head by state forces as he went out to celebrate the World Cup defeat in Bandar Anzali last night, like many across the country. He is only 27 years old,” according to on IHRNGO’s .official Twitter account.
According to that organization, forensic authorities refused to hand over the young man’s body to the family “despite the fact that many people had gathered outside the building to give him their support.”
The Iranian team lost two days ago against the United States (0-1) on the last day of their group, a defeat that meant their exit from the tournament.
According to this NGO’s latest count, Iranian security forces have killed at least 448 people, including 60 children and 29 women, in the uprisings that have taken place in that country over the past two months.
The provisional count includes only cases verified by IHRNGO through documentary evidence such as death certificates or testimony from medical personnel or confirmation by two independent sources.
Protests erupted in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in September after being arrested for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code.
Born in 2005 and registered in Norway since 2009, Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO) says it is made up of people from inside and outside Iran and has members in the United States, Canada, Japan and several European countries.
