Hansi Flick, the coach of Germany introduced only one change in the decisive match against Costa Rica regarding the starting lineup against Spain. The inclusion of Leroy Sané, who returned to the starting eleven, in midfield in place of defender Thilo Kehrer meant that Joshua Kimmich left his midfield position and took over at right-back.
Germany needed the victory to advance to the World Cup and to keep Spain from losing to Japan.
Costa Rica will come out with three novelties in the starting eleven, one in each line. The ‘Tico’ coach, Luis Fernando Suárez, bet on Juan Pablo Vargas in the defense of the five, in place of the suspended Francisco Calvo, while in the center from the field Brandon Aguilera entered for Gerson Torres and Johan Venegas the will lead the attack instead of Anthony Contreras.
The rest of the team is the same one that jumped to victory (0-1) against Japan, allowing Costa Rica to have options in the qualifiers.
