Modern football and its devastating consequences

Date:

more injuries and more downtime: Players’ thighs pay a heavy price in modern football as the intensity level of matches increases and seasons lengthen, according to a scientific study published on Tuesday.

According to this study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and funded by UEFA, 2,636 hamstring injuries were recorded between 2000 and 2021 for a total of 3,909 professional players.

The number of injuries of this type doubled during the season, from 12% of the total number of injuries identified in the first season to 24% in the last season. The number of days lost due to these injuries also doubled, with an average duration of thirteen days.

To understand these increases, scientists have focused on the past eight years. Researchers analyzed data from the medical teams of 54 European clubs in 20 countries over 21 seasons on the time players spent in training and games, periods absent due to injury, illness or other reasons. , and the type of damage (structural or functional).

They concluded that the main reason for the increase in the number of thigh injuries is the lengthening periods during which players play many high-intensity games. Therefore, bodies are put to the test for a longer period of time.

The risk of injury also increases during matches: it is ten times higher than in training. At the same time, researchers found a significant increase in the number and severity of injuries outside of competition.

High risk of relapse

Another consequence of modern football: the risk of relapse is very high. Of all the injuries registered between 2000 and 2021, close to 20% were relapses, of which more than two-thirds were considered early, that is, within two months of returning to competition.

This situation makes life difficult for clubs by making players unavailable during the season. Regardless of the season, over the past two decades, one in five players has missed practice or a game due to a hamstring injury.

A typical team of 25 soccer players can expect to suffer about eight injuries per season, according to researchers.
