The Portuguese Carlos Carvalhal, coach of Celta de Vigo, left this Wednesday for the bench of the Portuguese soccer team because he feels “happy” in Balaídos, where he arrived in November to replace the Argentine Eduardo “Chacho” Coudet.
“For me it is a great pride to be included in the list of potential candidates for the coach, but I am one hundred percent in Celta and I have been here this year and a half in the club. I am very excited and very comfortable”, declared he said in a press conference.
On the eve of the visit to Gernika in the Copa del Rey, Carvalhal recalled that during his time in charge of Sheffield Wednesday he turned down an offer from a Premier League team because for him “the most important thing” was to be happy.
“I really believe in the Celta project, in the ideas of the president and Luís Campos. Those who know me know that when I am happy, I will never change, no matter who comes,” he said.
Fernando Santos, who has a contract with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) until 2024, has left his position as coach after the ‘quinas’ exit in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar against Morocco.
The former Portuguese coach took over the reins of the national team in 2014, replacing Paulo Bento. In 2016 he won the European Championship for France, the first major trophy in the history of the Portuguese national team, and in 2019 the League of Nations.
