Expansion of the Pest – African pig fever in the Sauerland

Date:

In the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the first case of the African pig spest (ASP) is detected. A hunter had found the carcass of a wild boar. For home and wild boar, an infection with the ASP virus is almost always fatal.

Farmers are afraid of spreading the plague. The Varkensplest, originally spread in Africa, was first discovered in the European Union in 2014. The Pest broke out in Germany five years ago, and since then several thousand finds have been confirmed at Wild Boars in Brandenburg, Saxony, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württtemberg.

“It is the primary goal to prevent a spread of the local case in the wild boar.

Safe for people and other animals
For people and other types of home and agricultural animals than pigs, the African pig plague is harmless (see video above). The consumption of potentially infected meat is also harmless because the viruses do not infect the human body.

The trigger for the disease is a virus that is transferred by the Leather Teek in the countries of origin. The pathogen is resistant and contagious for months. Pigs can be infected by body fluids from sick animals or polluted waste and equipment. Possible symptoms are fever, gastrointestinal or breathing difficulties. The plague is incurable in pigs and almost always ends fatal.
