Katir will be looking for the double in San Silvestre in his expected clash with Cheptegei

Date:

Mohamed Katir will restart the Nationale Nederlanden-San Silvestre Vallecana on December 31 with the aim of repeating last year’s successa goal that will be difficult when facing Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei, world record holder of 5000 and 10,000 meters outdoors.

Katir, runner-up in Europe in the 5,000 and world bronze in the 1,500, holds the best Spanish mark in history in a 10K, he certainly achieved in 2021 at the international San Silvestre Vallecana with 27:45.

That victory for Katir last year was the first for a Spanish athlete in the Madrid race since 2003when Chema Martínez won it.

With Katir, triple national record holder at the distances of 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters outside, the rivalry on the Madrid asphalt between two of the best middle-distance runners in the world at the moment will be delivered, as Joshua Cheptegei will run also on December 31st.

Cheptegei, 26, will be looking to beat compatriot Jacob Kiplimo’s record in Madridwho in 2018, with a time of 26:41, broke the previous record (26:54), held by Eliud Kipchoge since 2006.

The Ugandan athlete, double world champion in the 10,000 meters and Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo in the 5,000, will also try to achieve the best mark ever in the 10k in Vallecaswhich is currently held by Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto, when he ran 26:24 in Valencia in 2020. If it is achieved in Madrid, it will not be a world record because it cannot be compared due to the extreme unevenness of the test.
