Gemechu, Niyonsaba and Chepkoech, trio of applicants for Vallecana

Ethiopians Beatrice Chepkoechworld champion in the 3,000 obstacles, and Tsehay GemechuNN Running Team athlete, and Burundian Francine Niyonsabafifth in the 10,000 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, the main contender for victory on December 31 at the San Silvestre Vallecana international.

NN Running Team athlete, Tsehay Gemechu, has extensive experience on asphalt despite his 24 years. The Ethiopian arrived in Madrid with the aim of extending the streak of athletes from the African country, who won the last two editions thanks to the victories of Yalemzerf Yehualaw and Degitu Azimeraw.

Gemechu has in his bag fourth place at the 2019 World Cup in the outdoor 5,000 meters and is the African champion of the 10,000 meters, a distance in which he has a personal best of 30:15 and in which he wishes down in Madrid to get closer to 29:54, 2018 by Brigid Kosgei.

The world champion in more than 3,000 obstacles, Beatrice Chepkoech, who temporarily left the track with the intention of flying these ten kilometers, will also start in Madrid.

The Kenyan athlete, World Cup gold medalist in 2019, is the current world record holder in over 3,000 obstacles and has, among other achievements, a Diamond League overall, a fourth place in the Rio Olympics and a mixed relay world championship in Kenya in 2017.

The triangle of contenders for victory in the Nationale-Nederlanden San Silvestre Vallecana is completed by Francine Niyonsaba from Burundi. The 29-year-old athlete experienced a turning point in his professional career, when his hyperandrogenism and the decision of World Athletics kept him from middle-distance events where he achieved good results, as Olympic runner-up in Rio and world runner-up in 2017, as well as two-time indoor world champion, all in the 800 meters.

Niyonsaba, already established in the midfielder, signed good performances with a fifth place in the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, in addition to several victories in the Diamond League in the 3,000 meters.
