Kyrgios reveals why he didn’t actually go to the United Cup

Nick Kyrgios He said he withdrew from the inaugural United Cup to be in top condition for next month’s Australian Open, adding that he did not expect everyone to understand the reason behind his decision.

Kyrgios, ranked 22nd in the world, was set to lead Australia into the joint ATP and WTA event but withdrew from the tournament due to injury on Wednesday, surprising his own teammates with the late announcement.

“People underestimate the pressure and nerves of being part of one of the biggest tournaments of the year,” Wimbledon runner-up Kyrgios told The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald.

“Add to that an injury and you add to the mountain of pressure you are facing. So feeling good physically is important.”

Kyrgios added that he had contacted the CEO of Tennis Australia, Craig Tileyand with the United Cup tournament director, Stephen Farrowabout his injury.

“We all work together to try to get the best result. Not everyone will understand it or see it from my point of view and that’s okay,” said Kyrgios.

“I work hard every day with my team on my development and talk to William, my physio, after every session. I tried to be ready but at some point you have to listen to the advice they give to you.”

Speaking after the defeat De Minaur, Australia’s co-captain, Lleyton HewittHe said he didn’t hear about Kyrgios’ departure until Wednesday’s eve, either.

Asked how Kyrgios could improve his communication, Hewitt told reporters that “probably just responding would do. That’s the normal way to do it. It took a while (before he responded).”
