Marc Overmars, a former Arsenal, Barcelona and Netherlands player, was hospitalized during the night from Thursday to Friday after suffering a “mild stroke”, according to Antwerp.
“Marc Overmars, Director of Football Affairs in Antwerp, fell ill last night and was admitted to hospital with a minor stroke. Marc is doing well but needs to rest for a while,” the club said on its Twitter account.
Overmars, 49, started working for Antwerp in March, a few weeks after leaving the post of sporting director at Ajax Amsterdam.
As a player, the Dutch winger played at the beginning and end of his career with his country’s modest Go Ahead Eagles (1990-1991 and 2008-2009) and also in the ranks of Willem II (1991-1992), Ajax (1992-1997 ), Arsenal (1997-2000) and Barcelona (2000-2004), in addition to playing 86 games with the Netherlands national team.
