Spanish open water, with access criteria to select competitions for Paris 2024

Date:

Along with its swimming classification criteria, the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation was announced this Tuesday open water selection criteria (Olympic distances of 10 kilometers) to participate in selected competitions for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This aspect is different from swimming before the Olympic Games. That is, while in swimming there are national competitions that act as direct qualifiers for Paris, in open water all passes for the Games depend on FINA competitions (now World Aquatics). Therefore, RFEN “only” can define how you have access to participate in these international selections. These will be the 2023 Fukuoka World Cup and the 2024 Doha World Cup.

In addition, as a great novelty for Paris already announced in recent months, those classified in the 800 and 1500 free in the pool will be able to participate in the open water. RFEN established in its selection criteria that Priority for Spanish participation will be given to those who get places this way in Fukuoka and Doha. From there, it will be the selection criteria for World Cups giving access to the French Games.

3. AREAS WITH ACCESS FOR CLASSIFIEDS IN SWIMMING AT 800 AND 1500 FREE

World Aquatics has offered as a novelty for Paris 2024 the possibility that swimmers participating in the Games in the 800 or/and in the 1500 free may swim in 10 kilometer open water competitions as long as the quota of two swimmers per country will not exceed each test. The RFEN has established that the priority of participation in the open water of the Games is for swimmers who have secured a direct place in this modality. Thus, if the limit of two places is not covered, the participation in open water at Paris 2024 of swimmers who participated in the Games in the 800 or 1500 free will be considered.
