Danielle Reyna, the mother of the US men’s national team midfielder, gio queennotified the US soccer federation last month of the incident in which the former coach Gregg Berhalter her husband lost in 1991, ESPN and other outlets reported Wednesday.
Danielle, who Gregg and Rosalind Berhalter have known for years, reportedly told the federation about the couple’s bar fight 31 years ago after Berhalter criticized her son for a lack of attitude after of the World Cup.
Berhalter told a conference after returning from Qatar that one player in the team was “obviously not living up to expectations on and off the pitch.” Gio Reyna, 20, later confirmed in an Instagram post that Berhalter was talking to her.
“I thought it was especially unfair that Gio, who apologized for acting immature about his limited playing time, was still being dragged through the mud when Gregg asked for and received forgiveness for making a something worse at the same age.” Danielle Reyna said in a statement, according to ESPN.
The reports come a day after US Soccer revealed it had hired an independent law firm to launch an investigation into the incident. Berhalter and his wife released a lengthy statement Tuesday saying someone alerted the US Soccer Federation in an effort to “take me down.”
Danielle is the wife of former national team captain Claudio, who is the sporting director for Austin FC. The couple reportedly denied threatening Berhalter, whose contract expired on December 31 and who was considered one of the favorites to keep the job. However, the federation announced that the current assistant coach Anthony Hudson he will direct the January concentration team while conducting a “technical review” of the selection program.
