The Bayern Munich revealed this Friday that the winger Noussair mazraoui tested positive for the coronavirus during Morocco’s historic run to the semifinals of World Cup and since then a swelling was found around his heart.
Bayern left Mazraoui out of the squad that left for a winter training camp in Qatar on Friday before the Bundesliga season resumes on January 20, citing the aforementioned inflammation as an argument. The club said the footballer tested positive in early December and that is why he did not play in Morocco’s quarterfinal win over Portugal.
His disappearance was later attributed to an unspecified illness. Mazraoui returned to play the first half of the semi-final loss to France as Morocco became the first African and Arab team to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Bayern said an examination in Munich after the tournament found “slight swelling” and that Mazraoui was unavailable to play “at the moment”. This type of inflammation is a known complication of COVID-19 infection.
