The former Brazilian striker, who briefly played for Barcelona in 1980, suffered from colon cancer

Former Brazilian footballer Carlos Roberto de Oliveira, ‘Roberto Dinamita’, Vasco da Gama’s biggest idol, who had spent a short spell in Barcelona in 1980, died of colon cancer on Sunday at the age of 68.

“It is with the deepest regret that Vasco da Gama announces that the #MayorDeTodos has left us this Sunday,” the Brazilian club that defended Roberto Dinamita for almost his entire career wrote on its Twitter profile. “Dynamite devoted 29 of his 68 years to the club, as an athlete and as president. We will love you forever, Calu (as he was also known by his friends). Rest in peace,” Vasco da Gama wrote.

Unable to overcome the cancer he had been battling since 2021, Roberto Dinamica died at Unimed Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, where he was admitted, although his delicate state of health was unknown. Vasco da Gama has declared seven days of official mourning “for the death of the greatest idol in the club’s history”.

Vasco da Gama recalled that Dinamita made his debut in 1971 and, according to official data, scored 707 goals in 1,109 matches played for the Brazilian team. Between 1979 and 1980, Dinamita, signed by Barça to unsuccessfully replace Austrian Hans Krankl, played only three months in the Barça team and in 1989 defended the Portuguesa de Sao Paulo. He then returned to Vasco da Gama, where he retired from active football in 1992.
