Things are not off to a good start for Garbiñe Muguruza this 2023. After 2022 to forget, the former world number 1 is currently counting his fights by defeats.
If last week it was Bianca Andreescu who knocked her out in the first round of the Adelaide 1 tournament after an incredible comeback, this time Belinda Bencic was his executioner (6-3, 6-4) in Adelaide 2.
The Olympic champion hardly gave the Spanish player optionswithout any break points in the entire match.
After an initial 3-0 lead, the Swiss effectively held onto his lead to keep the break and scored in the first round without surprise against a Muguruza who improved her serve but lacked resources elsewhere.
The second set started evenly. Both maintain service with solvency in search of an opportunity to tip the balance. And that chance came in the ninth game, when the Spaniards made more mistakes than necessary and gave the Swiss a break that would end in certainty.
This way, Garbiñe Muguruza will appear next Monday at the Australian Open without a win in her locker. The Spanish player, number 58 in the WTA ranking, fell last year in the second round of the first Grand Slam against the French Alizé Cornet.
