FIFA has made official the list of 14 candidates for its award for the best player in the world in 2022, including the ’10’ from Argentina, Benzema, Mbappé, Haaland, Lewandowski, Modric, Vinicius or Neymar
FIFA has announced the 14 candidates for The Best, the top football body award for the best player in the world in 2022. Among the candidates for the award is Lionel Messi, the top favorite after leading Argentina to third place, from Albiceleste World Cup and who is aiming for his second trophy after the Ballon d’Or award split.
They second the star of Rosario as candidates for FIFA recognition Karim Benzema who is the other favorite despite being left out of the World Cup. The award recognizes the best of the past calendar year, in which the French striker set the benchmark for a Real Madrid champion of the Champions League and La Liga.
One step behind the Frenchman and Argentine is Kyliam Mbappé, boosted by his status as top scorer in the World Cup despite falling short of the title; and Norwegian Erling Haaland, who was not in Qatar but has been shattering goalscoring records since arriving at Guardiola’s Manchester City last summer.
Real Madrid players Vinicius and Luka Modric, third in the World Cup with Croatia, as well as Barcelona player Robert Lewandowski are among the four League representatives among the nominees along with Benzema. They complete the list, albeit with practically no options, Neymar, Kevin de Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, Julián Álvarez, Jude Bellingham and Achraf Hakimi.
