Karius does not play a minute, but renews for Newcastle

Date:

Loris Karius’ career has been marked forever on May 26, 2018 where his mistakes contributed to Real Madrid’s victory in the 2017-18 Champions League final against the then German goalkeeper’s team, Liverpool. A punch from Sergio Ramos stunned him, as explained later by Jürgen Klopp, coach of the ‘reds’. Karius has been at Newcastle since September 2022 and the Saint James’ Park club announced on Thursday his renewal until the end of the season, although he has not played a single minute. In fact, Karius has not played a match for 690 days, since he performed at Union Berlin.

Karius has revealed many times “how difficult and tiring” over the years to always answer questions about the kyiv final. “What happened that day is things that happen in soccer. I still have a lot to offer,” he told the ESPN channel.

});

At 29, Karius (Biberach am der Riss, Germany, June 22, 1993) is not just a replacement for Nick Pope at Newcastle. Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka are also ahead of the German goalkeeper. But the Saint James’ Park club exercised the option to extend his contract until June.

He was the starting goalkeeper for Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool in that 2017-18 seasonhe dreamed of becoming a European champion in kyiv and, although he continues to belong to the Anfield club (where he did not play a single minute in 2021-22), after the final he was first loaned to Besiktas (from 2018 to 2020 ) and then was at Union Berlin (2020-21, played only 5 games).

The German goalkeeper belongs to the discipline of Liverpool until June 30, 2022, but since that last Champions League he has never worn the ‘red’ shirt again. He signed for Liverpool on 1 July 2016 from Mainz. Before making his professional debut with the said German team, between 2009 and 2011 he played in the lower categories of Manchester City.
