Clattenburg fled from Egypt

Date:

Mark Clattenburg, former member of the Premier League, resigned from his position as Chairman of the Egyptian Referees Committee after five months in the position. The Egyptian Football Federation (EFA) confirmed that it had accepted Clattenburg’s resignation. Harsh criticism and even lies about him led to the hasty departure of the former English collegiate.

Clattenburg, 47, who began directing Premier League matches in 2004, has been criticized by Mortada Mansour, president of Zamalek, on the club’s TV channel in Cairo since the former referee took the post. In addition, Mansour falsely claimed about Clattenburg that the former referee abandoned his wife to start a homosexual relationship, something that is not certain.

But Clattenburg is also concerned about mistakes by Egyptian referees in matches, as the league has changed English assignments and there are also problems for foreign referees who come to whistle in Egypt.

Clattenburg blew the whistle in his last game in April 2017, in Leicester City’s 1-0 win over West Brom. He led the 2016 Euro Cup final between Portugal and France (1-0 for the Portuguese) and the Champions League between Real Madrid and Atlético of the same year (5-3 for the whites after a 1-1 loss ). After retiring, Clattenburg worked as a refereeing officer in several countries, including Saudi Arabia, China and Greece.

Zamalek is one of the two most powerful clubs in Egypt, along with its great rivals, Al-Ahly. Mansour’s criticism of Clattenburg has increased in recent weeks, with Zamalek’s slump in the league, which ended with a 3-0 defeat to Al-Ahly on Saturday.
