The Madrid Marathonincluded within Zurich Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series which will be held on April 23, will officially certify, and for the first time in the world, its carbon footprint with AENOR in accordance with the ISO 14064 standard, applying fifteen steps to promote sustainability in a test in which 35,000 runners will participate.
The Maintenance This is a strategic line in which it has been working for many years MAPOMA and which now concludes the calculation and validation of AENOR’s carbon footprint. The project has the participation of Global Omnium, which will provide the necessary technology to make it possible through its GO2 platform.
The carbon footprint It is an instrument to identify, evaluate and communicate the impact of an activity on climate change. AENORcertification body in Spainwill verify this carbon footprint, independently ensuring that the statement made on greenhouse gas emissions is complete.
The company Global Omnium will measure all emissions generated, directly and indirectly, by the three competitions (marathon, half marathon and 10k) of the Zurich Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Madrid.
The measures to be taken in favor of maintaining the test are the elimination of moisturizing sponges in the races, digitization of paper elements (routes, regulations, final instructions, etc.), replacement of plastic for recyclable materials in provisioning bags, glass replacement pets through ecological cups, the inclusion of bicycles and skaters as support vehicles in the race, the use of electric vehicles in the race and the promotion of the use of public transport among the participants.
In addition, there will also be a garbage collection and recycling campaign with the town hall of Madrid and Ecoembestraining and disposition of volunteers at all aid stations, use of one hundred percent recycled fabric for the production of participants’ T-shirts, a donation of surplus aid stations to NGOsrecycling advertising and information banners and a giant advertising canvas installation that absorbs CO2, the equivalent of two hundred cars in one year.
