The Premier League Referees College (PGMOL) has decided that Lee Mason, the VAR referee of the duel between Arsenal and Brentford on Saturday (1-1), will not be appointed for the coming weekend.
The PGMOL did not award any matches to Mason, after the mistake he made in Arsenal-Brentford, when he failed to rule Brentford’s equalizing goal as offside. After a lengthy review of the play, Mason ruled that Ethan Pînnock was not offside when launching a free-kick as he understood that he was not involved in the play. The action continued and Ivan Toney made it 1-1.
second time this season
It is the second time this season that Mason has been sent to the fridge after a mistake he made in a Newcastle-Crystal Palace game in early September.
The Premier League responded in kind to the mistakes made this weekend, with John Brooks also failing to disallow a goal for offside to Pervis Estupiñán at Crystal Palace-Brighton & Hove Albion that should have gone up on the scoreboard (1-1).
Brooks, who should have been the VAR referee at Liverpool-Everton on Monday and Arsenal-Manchester City tomorrow, was relieved of his duties.
