Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has justified Russia’s withdrawal from the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with his alleged growing political bias. “Individual rulings by the court – ECtHR – were overtly political in nature,” Putin said Tuesday on Russia’s Day of Judges, according to Interfax news agency. Recently, this has taken on an “unbearable character,” he added.
“In any case, bias and bias, however justified, are absolutely unacceptable for any judicial system,” Putin said. Russia was expelled from the Council of Europe months ago for its war of aggression against Ukraine. As a result, the largest country in the world in terms of area is no longer a member of the European Convention on Human Rights, which the Court of Justice supervises. However, several thousand lawsuits against Moscow are still pending at the Human Rights Court. Moscow has already announced that it will not abide by the sentences.
ECtHR found politically motivated judgments of Russian courts
In the past, courts have ordered Russia to pay damages for violations of human and civil rights in numerous cases. In particular, statements about the Yukos group or the Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, which were awarded damages by Strasbourg, caused anger in Moscow. In both cases, the ECtHR found a politically motivated ruling by Russian courts.
According to Putin, Russia’s withdrawal from the ECtHR will not lead to a deterioration of the legal situation for Russian citizens. Critics, on the other hand, have complained that repressive laws have tightened significantly since the invasion of Ukraine about a year ago. Opponents of war in particular have been draconianly punished ever since.
