Jon Rahm is back, less than a year later, at the top of the golf world after his third brilliant victory at the Genesis International, held at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades (California).
Rahm, who marked the historic figure of winning his third tournament of the season on this stretch of the course (he previously won the Sentry Tournament and the American Express), overtook American Scottie Scheffler and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy on the overall list, also present this weekend, but can only be the twelfth and twenty-ninth, respectively.
The player of Barrika, who knows how to resist the pressure of the American Max Homa and even Patrick Cantlay on the last day, leads the universal classification with an average of 9.51 points, compared to Scheffler’s 9.00 and McIlroy’s 8.40.
Rahm was at the top of the table for 43 weeks between July 2020 and March 2022. Now he’s back after a few really full months. Since finishing second at the BMW PGA Championship in September, he has not left the ‘top 10’ in any tournament, including five victories.
This last was the tenth on the American circuit, where he surpassed his idol Severiano Ballesteros, and he is only one away from the Spaniard with the most wins, Sergio García, who will not increase his account by moving to LIV. Also, the Basque player leads the FedExCup classification with 2,000 points, 426 more than Homa himself. American Keegan Bradley is already at 994.
Cantlay also continues to rise. He was fourth in 7.11 after beating Australian Cameron Smith, also present at LIV, and while American Xander Schauffele maintains sixth place (5.86), Will Zalatoris (5.55) and Max Homa (5.49) are seventh and eighth, just ahead of American Justin Thomas (5.14) and Colin Morikawa (5.10).
Chilean Joaquín Niemann and Mexican Abraham Ancer continue in places 23 and 27respectively, Chilean Mito Pereira dropped to 50, Spaniards Adrián Otaegui, Adri Arnaus and Pablo Larrazábal dropped to 79, 86 and 88, and Colombian Sebastián Muñoz to 98.
