The women’s group Portugal managed, for the first time in its history, to qualify for the final stage of the World Cup after losing on Wednesday Cameroon 2-1 in a match played at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton (New Zealand).
A penalty from Carole Costa in extra time threw the match off balance as the Cameroonian team equalized moments before through Ajara Nchout Njoya and proved the historic moment for the Portuguese team.
Diana Gomes, after 22 minutes after a shot on the post from Kika Nazareth on a free kick, opened the scoring, but Francesco Neto’s students could not finish the victory and Cameroon forced a break- emotional finish that went to the side of the European team thanks to a hand on a shot by Andreia Jacinto that the Benfica defender did not miss.
Portugal will play in the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in group E with the United States, current world champions, Vietnam and the Netherlands, current runners-up.
