F1 will test the new rain pack this year

Date:

The Formula 1 Commission this Tuesday approved several relevant changes for the present and future of the highest competition in world motorsport. Some of them, are dedicated to improving the show on rainy days, or rather, to ensure that it can compete with the conditions that in previous years featured days that should not be repeated, as in case of Spa 2021. To do this, F1 approved two steps. The first, the introduction of Pirelli’s new rain tires from the 2023 F1 Emilia Romagna GP. And the second, more revolutionary, the tests that the F1 teams will carry out with the new rain packs that will be implemented on the cars. in the rainy season to reduce the spray they emit and allow riders to race in these conditions with visibility they currently don’t have.

“After the successful tests carried out by Pirelli, with the support of the teams, a rain tire was reached with more performance than the previous specification: this tire does not require the use of tire covers,” said of the FIA in their statement about the first point, noting that these tires will be available from the next appointment at Imola.

Regarding the second point, regarding the new rain pack that will be introduced in the vehicles, it was announced that the tests will be carried out for the second and third quarter of this year. “A technical directive is being prepared to allow teams to carry out such work outside the limits of the aerodynamic test restriction (ATR) and outside the cost limit. The track test is planned for the second or third quarter of 2023,” commented the International Automobile Federation.

OTHER CHANGES

Radio messages between teams and drivers

It was approved to “relax the regulation of radio messages between teams and pilots at all times during a competition.”

The park is closed for events that include a Sprint session

The FIA also decided to provide bigger facilities and be more permissive for the teams to tackle the sprint races that will be held this year. “In the context of reducing the current excessive workload of the technical staff and the FIA during events that include a Sprint session, the Commission has approved a revised policy for receiving the application of the Parc Fermé, where the parc fermé of the Sprint weekend allows more opportunities to change. breakable parts and more use of self-declared forms of parc fermé.”

“It will apply throughout the Parc Fermé period from when the car leaves for qualifying on Friday until the car starts the race. It will be implemented through a Technical Directive.

circuit changes

The FIA has confirmed several updates and changes to the circuits for the upcoming season. For example, in Saudi Arabia, significant changes were made to improve visibility when cornering. In Azerbaijan and Miami, the runway will completely reappear. At Zandvoort, the space between the pit stop positions increased by 1.5m compared to last year. And in Qatar a new pit building and paddock infrastructure will be built.

Regardless of all this, the FIA will make changes to several areas of DRS this season to “make overtaking easier or more difficult on certain circuits where it is considered insufficiently challenging.” These changes will be implemented in Bahrain, Jeddah, Melbourne, Baku and Miami, and will involve the adjustment of detection and trigger zones, and in Melbourne the fourth trigger zone will be restored.

Sporting, Technical and Financial Regulations

Minor changes to the 2023 Sports, Technical and Financial Regulations were unanimously approved, where it was necessary to highlight the implementation of a “winter closing period” for teams and manufacturers of power units.

The regulations for the points to be distributed when a race ends with a reduced number of laps have also been changed, to prevent what happened in Japan 2022 from happening, when due to the race ending under the checkered flag, they was distributed the total points despite the fact that there were fewer turns.
