The Andalusian team defends the great 3-0 first leg against PSV in Eindhoven at the Sánchez Pizjuán
Sevilla have once again found their special oasis in a season plagued by difficulties from the beloved Europa League. The second continental competition, in which the club Nervión is lord and master with six titles in the showcases, also pays a special tribute with a visit to the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven. There he won his first crown in the then UEFA Cup in May 2006, the club’s first trophy after almost sixty long years of drought, so the podium will bring back fond memories of Jesús Navas, Sevilla captain and the only survivor in the current Seville of that historic night.
The score against PSV also provides some relaxation, as the valuable 3-0 score for Sánchez Pizjuán gives Jorge Sampaoli’s men a margin to earn a place in the round of 16 of the tournament. However, the Argentinian coach does not forget the first part of the first leg, in which Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team dominated before encountering Sevilla’s tremendous effectiveness in the second half, which at times reminded the exuberant squad of other times and not the languid version of recent times.
To avoid any kind of unnecessary complication, Sampaoli brought about twenty players to Eindhoven, with many problems in a defense for which he had no Marcao, Baldé, Rekik or Gudelj. The injured Corona and Papu Gómez will also not be available, in addition to the suspended Lamela and midfielder Pape Gueye, who is not registered in the European competition after entering the winter market.
A large part of the absences, as many as PSV’s, come after a setback in the Dutch Eredivisie against Utrecht, which put them fourth in the domestic league, six points behind leader Feyenoord. Van Nistelrooy, an old acquaintance of Spanish football, is aware of the difficulty of the undertaking, but is not giving up on what would be an epic comeback.
