“LIV is different, it wants to attract young people and promote golf”

Date:

After an arthroscopy on his knee from which he fully recovered and two Asian Tour tournaments on his return to competition in February -Saudi International and International Oman Series- the man from Castellón Sergio Garcia, 43 years old, is very excited about his second season at LIV Golf (Arab Super League). With a zoom in various international media, including Mundo Deportivo, the champion of August Masters 2017spoke about this new project that is changing golf, about the relationship with the Grand Slams and also about Jon Rahmwhere he assured that “if I could, I would sign him for LIV, but he has been very good on the PGA Tour and what he has achieved this beginning of the year, with three victories and two more top ten in five tournaments is The other player I will bring is the Japanese Hideki Matsuyama”.

Sergio is ready to tee off this Friday on the course of El Camaleón, in the Mexican resort of Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen, in the heart of the Riviera Maya. “The truth is that I’m really looking forward to starting the season here, at this time of the year, the course is completely different from when we played it in November, and the truth is that it’s in very good condition, better than ever”, he pointed to the virtual zoom Garcia.

Asked about what the Super League is and what it means, this year with 14 tournaments and one of them in Spain (at the Valderrama field in Cádiz), Borriol is very clear: “obviously the product is different, different from the usual let’s. play all our lives. I think the team feeling is what makes it so special, because you’re not just playing individually for yourself, but for your three teammates who are best friends, and in I think this way you have a more intimate relationship than maybe you can’t have in a normal tournament. It’s something very special for us and we really enjoy it”.

He also compared it to the PGA Tour. “We were attracted to the product because it was different from what we were used to playing before. This year there is also new US television coverage and from eight to fourteen tournaments on five continents, making it even more global. Another of LIV’s goals is that it focuses on getting people who follow us to be younger, to rejuvenate golf, and follow tournaments more closely. On the PGA Tour, perhaps some players have a louder voice, here they listen to all of us to improve this Super League. What if I regret leaving one to play LIV? They take good care of us financially and we don’t play many tournaments, enjoying more time with the family”, highlighted Sergio.

Another topic discussed by the man from Castellón is the confirmation of participation – open to all exemption winners – of LIV players in the four Grand Slams: Masters, PGA, Open USA and British in that order, without vetoes. or any discrimination. “At the end of the day, they have done what they were supposed to do. The best in the world have to play in the ‘bigs’, and if there are a few of the best in LIV and they are not allowed to join the ‘majors’ then not all the best in the world are there, and the public wants to see that too Dustin (Johnson), Cameron (Smith), Brooks (Koepka) or Bryson (DeChambeau)”.

Sports brand Adidas has decided not to renew at the end of 2022 the sponsorship contract it has had with him since 1999, when he turned professional at the Spanish Open in El Prat. “After 23 years, it hurts that your main sponsor left you. It was not part of their plans to renew me, they wanted to go elsewhere, although the relationship is still good,” Sergio concluded without an iota of resentment for it.
