Zverev returned to the semifinals for the first time since the injury

Date:

The German Alexander Zverev will play the semifinal of a ATP tournament for the first time since his last serious injury Roland Garros, after qualifying this Thursday for the Dubai with a victory in the quarterfinals against the Italian Lorenzo Sonegoby 7-5 and 6-4.

Zverev, ranked 16th in the world, took another step back into the top-10 with this result against number 67, a struggling Sonego but was deflated after surrendering the first round and in the second he failed to re-engage in the match.

The Italian made one last attempt in what would be the final game, when he had three ‘break’ balls for the first time in that set, but Zverev, coached by Spaniard Sergi Bruguera, came back from at 0-40 and got control of the pass in the semifinals.

The German, the tournament’s seventh favorite, will play for a place in the final with the winner of the clash between Russian Andrey Rublev and Dutch Botic van de Zandschulp.

The first seed is the Serbian Novak Djokovic.
