The loss against Borussia Dortmund on Friday night (2-1) may not be the only bad news Leipzig received from their visit to Signal Iduna Park. Marco Rose, coach of the energetic team, fears that his best player, Christopher Nkunku, has recovered from the injury that kept him out since November.
Starting for the first time since then, Nkunku is suffering from some muscular discomfort that could leave him on dry dock again. “I’m afraid ‘Christ’ might be gone from us again for a few days. He felt something in the muscle during a sprint after contact earlier,” Rose explained to DAZN.
Marco Rose laments
Nkunku was finally substituted in the 83rd minute but Rose regretted not making the decision sooner. “You play against Dortmund, you want to win, you want to get points. In the end, I should have done better and I should have taken him out”, lamented the German coach. “I had trained well this week. Now we have to see what really happened.”
Top scorer in the Bundesliga before the winter break with 12 goals, Nkunku was injured in training for the French team before traveling to Qatar to participate in the World Cup.
Reappeared on February 18
Nkunku reappeared on February 18 against Wolfsburg and also played minutes against Manchester City in the Champions League and against Eintracht Frankfurt last week.
Leipzig, fourth in the Bundesliga, will be hoping to get a good result with a good game tonight but the defeat leaves them 7 points behind a Borussia Dortmund team who are temporarily ahead of Bayern Munich.
