Chelsea beat Leeds but if they don’t improve too much they will make good on the proverbial bread for today, hunger for tomorrow (1-0). Graham Potter’s side ended a run of six games without a win thanks to Fofana’s lone goal but he was unable to rectify his poor play and his defensive disorganisation.
The truth is that with each passing day the game of ‘blues’ seems more and more troubling. If they won it would be almost a miracle, because Leeds deserved the draw and if they didn’t get it it was down to bad luck. They would do well to forget about trying to qualify for the Champions League and they should grit their teeth if they are going to enter Europe, because today’s game is a mission impossible.
And that the ‘blues’ didn’t start badly. They dominated the midfield, with a Kovacic needed for it, but they abused Joao Félix too much in the death zones, as Havertz and Sterling did little damage. Leeds, once they saw that, reduced Chelsea’s attacks to wing crosses to see what would happen.
It is worth saying that Havertz had a very clear one-on-one, where Meslier made a great save, and that Joao Félix put a ball from the front on the crossbar, but that’s the highlight of Potter’s characters, which is gradual. Little did they start to show more symptoms of problems at the back, mostly solved by Koulibaly.
Indeed, Chelsea’s goal came the only way possible: from set pieces. Fofana, who had already called for a corner kick, finished in the same spot after the break and this time put it in the back of the net (53′).
That created a will and I couldn’t for Leeds, who gained ground every minute from the ‘blues’ who, guilty by a defensive line with no coverage, paid very little for those errors. And there were chances to do so, such as one from Adams that brushed the top corner, or another from McKennie with a low finish. Chelsea just need to counterattack, but they don’t know how to do that sensibly against a Leeds side turned upside down.
Fortunately, for Kepa, for Koulibaly or Fofana, for whatever, but Chelsea took three important points that will be useful to try to change a dynamic that continues to look terrible.
